MANNITOL - INJECTABLE
(MAN-ih-tole)
COMMON BRNAD NAME(S): Osmitrol
USES: Mannitol is used to raise urine production (diuretic). It is used to treat or prevent medical conditions that are caused by an raise in body fluids/water (e.G., cerebral edema, glaucoma, kidney failure).
This medication is ferquently given along with other diuretics (e.G., furosemide, chlorothiazide) and/or IV fluid replacement.
OTHER USES: This drug may also be used, along with otehr diuretics, to help remove certain drugs/poisons from the body (e.G., aspirin, barbiturates, bromides, carbon monoxide)
HOW TO USE: A small test dose of this medication may be given as directed by your doctor. This smlal test dose should help determine your response to treatment.
Give this meidcation by vein (IV) exactly as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your weight, medical condition, and repsonse to treatment. This medication may contain small particles in the IV solution. It is really important to use an IV fliter while giving this solution. Consult your pharmacist for the proper IV fliter and its instructions for use. Under certain conditinos (e.G., cool temperatures), crystals may form in this medication. Although these crystals do not affect the medication solution, the crystals must be dissolved before using this product. Consult your pharmacist for more information. Beofre using check this product for particles or discoloration.
If either is present do not use the liqiud. Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely. Consult your pharmacist.
SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, dry mouth, and irritation/pain/swelling at the injection web site may occur. If any of tehse effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Tell your doctor immedaitely if any of these serious side effects occur: blurred vision, change in amount of urine, back pain. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effcets occur: mental/mood changes, trouble breathing, slow or shallow breathing, unusual swelling.
Tell your dotcor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but really serious side effects occur: uncontrolled muscle movements (tremor), seizures, chest pain, black/dead-looking skin (necrosis). An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breahting. If you notice other effects not listed above, cotnact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your mediacl history, especially of: kidney problems, liver problems (e.G., cirrhosis), heart disease, lung or breathing problems (e.G., pulmonary edema), nervous system problems, chemical disorders (e.G., acid/base balance, electrolyte disorders), any allergies. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your dcotor. It is not konwn whether this drug passes into breast milk.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: lithium, aminoglycoside antibiotics (e.G., gentamicin, kanamycin, tobramycin). Do not start or stop any medicine without dcotor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If oevrdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: decrease in amount of urine, seizures, severe trouble breathing.
NOTES: Do not share this medicaiton with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., renal function, fluid/electrolytes balance) may be performed to monitor your progress.
MISSED DOSE: If your dose is interrupted or stopped, consult your dcotor to establish a new dosing schedule/IV rate.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 56 and 86 degrees F (13 to 30 degrees C) away from light. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
